Biography
William C. Ahearn, 71, died Saturday, January 7, 2012,
at St. Mary's Hospital, Troy surrounded by his family.
Born in Schuylerville, he was the loving and devoted son of the late William D. Ahearn and Helen Miller Ahearn and beloved husband and best friend of 43 years to Jean Palladino Ahearn of Schaghticoke.
Bill attended Schuylerville High School, graduated from Bridgton Academy, North Bridgton, Maine and attended Hudson Valley Community College, Troy. Bill joined the Army, training at Fort McClellan, AL. He was assigned to the US Army 10th Medical Laboratory I Landstuhl, Germany. He was a senior Chemical Laboratory Tech. E5. After three years of service he received an Honorable Discharge with a citation for outstanding service and meritorious achievements. Bill worked for the New York State Department of Health at the Wadsworth Lab (Environmental Heath Center). He conducted lake Eutropication field studies for twenty years. He also was head of technical support on investigations of Radon in New York State, PCB's in the Hudson River, worldwide natural methane sources (New York, Panama, West Virginia), New York harbor sedimentation rates, acid rain effects on New York State lakes, collaborated with Environmental Canadian coring of Lake Ontario. Bill then moved to mass Spectrometry Lab. where he worked doing repair, design and adaptations of the spectrometers. He was cited in many scientific papers and reports for his technical excellence, co-authored several papers and developed many sampling and chemical procedures. He retired as a Lab equipment designer after 32 years of service.
Bill is known for his expertise in Statuary Restoration/Design and has restored both Religious/non-Religious Statues over the years. In addition, he is a handcrafting and woodworking expert. He was known for designing, crafting of furniture and tabernacles for various churches in the Albany Diocese. His restoration work can be found in a wide area of New York State, Vermont and Massachusetts. He a member of the National Sculpture Society and Halfmoon Woodcarving Group.
Bill was a devote Catholic, an active member of the former St. Patrick's Church, Troy. He was president of the parish council, lector, Eucharistic Minister and served on various committees. William was happiest in his Studio where he crafted many toys, plaques and fine furniture pieces for family and friends. His other interest included wild bird photography, reading and fine arts. Most of all he was thrilled caring for and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors in addition to his beloved wife, Jean, include two beautiful daughters Jennifer Ann Coso (Matthew) of Niskayuna, Michelle Anne Wagner (Rob) of Troy,
six grandchildren Alexis, Ayden William, Alyssa, Jacob and Joshua Coso of Niskayuna and Ryan Wagner of Watervliet. brothers in law George (Theresa) Palladino of Oneonta,
Philip (Phyllis) Palladino of Auterlitz, Michael (Patricia) Palladino of Pittstown,
sister in law Mary (Roger) Ayotte of Waterford, many loving nieces and nephews
who frequently called him "B" or "Mr. Bill", many loving cousins and dear friends, especially W. Tim and Sharon Brock and family.
William was predeceased by his beautiful infant daughters Christine Ann and
Anne Marie Ahearn.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Augustine's Church, 115th Street and 4th Avenue, Lansingburgh.
Burial will follow at Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
